ABSTRACT

In post-industrial societies, a key marker of adult status is the ability to manage one’s financial obligations by making prudent financial decisions. Yet, financial decision making is a dynamic and complex process, influenced by people and situations encountered across the lifespan. In this presentation, I will present a conceptual model to explain how external influences are transformed into financial literacy. Grounded in multidisciplinary and multinational research conducted over the past twenty-five years, I will provide insights regarding the key socializing influences that shape financial literacy and the implications of those insights for education and practice.
